I'm just a man reading Lao Tzu from the messiness of modern life, trying to understand what a 2,500-year-old text can teach me about leadership, desire, tension, and the kind of masculinity that actually helps rather than harms.</p><p>Chapter 3 hit me harder than the first two because it exposes patterns I've lived more than once: pedestalising people, overvaluing status, forcing outcomes, confusing ambition for alignment, and then beating myself up when things fall apart. This chapter is brutally simple, but I don't think it's meant to be read lightly. I'm trying to take it in slowly, line by line, letting it settle into my actual life rather than pretending I understand some poetic universal truth.</p><p>Here is how it makes sense to me right now.</p><p></p><h2 id="2b6fe59f-d93f-46ae-854c-426514e72ed1" data-toc-id="2b6fe59f-d93f-46ae-854c-426514e72ed1" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Overestimating great men creates powerlessness</h2><p>The first line is painfully familiar. I've spent most of my life looking for mentors, and that part I still believe is a strength. I've always been someone who studies excellence, who looks for guidance, who wants to be coached, but the pattern beneath that has been messy. Over and over I've put these mentors on pedestals, projected perfection onto them, made them bigger than they actually were. And inevitably, the pedestal collapses.</p><p>The moment you turn someone into a flawless figure, you hand them a kind of power they shouldn't have and didn't ask for, and you blind yourself to what's actually happening in front of you.</p><p>I did this with a somewhat <em>recent</em> mentor &amp; friend in a significant way (for the sake of this article, we’ll call him MC). At the time, I didn't see it as pedestalisation. I just thought I'd found a powerful mentor who could help me become a better man. But looking back, I can see how much of my own sovereignty I handed away, and the cost was obvious. There were moments where I witnessed things that now, with clarity, I find appalling; behaviour that went against my values, interactions with people that were manipulative, coercive and, in hindsight, clearly wrong.</p><p>But I brushed those things aside because the pedestal distorted my perception. It made me doubt my own inner knowing and convinced me the problem was me, not what I was witnessing. Eventually the illusion cracked, and I'm grateful for that. But I also carry the lesson that I should have seen it sooner. And I want to be clear… this isn't about demonising the MC. Ninety percent of what I learned in that chapter of my life was still valuable. The teaching can be solid even if the teacher has unresolved darkness.</p><p>Lao Tzu's warning is clear: if you inflate someone's stature, you diminish your own. Powerlessness is self-created when you worship someone instead of learning from them. This whole verse feels like an invitation to hold humans as humans. Not idols, not enemies, just people.</p><p></p><h2 id="eed8af7f-9def-4dde-87b0-c5b7f756cc60" data-toc-id="eed8af7f-9def-4dde-87b0-c5b7f756cc60" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Overvaluing possessions creates distortion</h2><p>The verse says possessions lead to theft, though I don't think it literally means stealing. I think it points to the way desire, attachment, and overvaluation distort our behaviour in ways we don't always recognise in the moment.</p><p>When I read this line, I searched myself and my past for a good example to share… there were quite a few, but one that hit hard (and to be honest - I didn’t want to share). I was about twenty years old, working in a sales team, and I had built up this reputation as the golden boy, the natural, the rising star. Then my results dipped, and instead of just facing that dip with honesty, I clung to the identity I'd built. I overvalued the status, the validation, the image of being the top guy.</p><p>And from that place, I crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed. I reattributed part of someone else's sale to myself. Not because I wanted to harm them, not because I saw it as stealing. I justified it with narratives in my head, convinced myself that I deserved it because I'd helped them, because I'd been the one leading, because it was fine.</p><p>It wasn't fine. It was insecurity disguised as entitlement.</p><p>When it was brought to my attention, I felt sick with shame. To this day, it's one of the clearest examples of what happens when I let selfish desire dominate. When I overvalue image, validation, and status, I distort my own integrity in ways that feel subtle until they're suddenly obvious.</p><p>This line in the Tao isn't there to moralise. It's simply stating how the structure works. When the centre is lost, behaviour gets warped. When we chase anything too hard, we bend ourselves into shapes that don't feel right. Alignment can't exist where overvaluation rules.</p><p></p><h2 id="19ca25fb-0721-4254-98c3-84932dd67f92" data-toc-id="19ca25fb-0721-4254-98c3-84932dd67f92" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Emptying the mind and filling the core</h2><p>The next part of the verse says the Master empties people's minds and fills their cores. I don't pretend to understand the exact intention behind that line, but here's what I think it means for me: it's the difference between knowledge and essence, between information and embodiment, between a mind that hoards ideas and a centre that actually lives them.</p><p>When my mind is full, I'm usually compensating. I'm overthinking, trying to manage outcomes, trying to impress, trying to maintain an identity. But when my core is full, I feel grounded. I act cleanly. I don't force things. I don't cling. I don't manipulate the structure to avoid discomfort.</p><p>This connects directly to the work we do inside Axis Brotherhood. Most men don't need more ideas. They need more substance, more centre, more clarity, more truth &amp; less noise. The mind fills quickly. The core fills slowly. But only the core sustains anything real.</p><p></p><h2 id="8cbe0d6b-4441-417e-833f-b8d1a95c91c7" data-toc-id="8cbe0d6b-4441-417e-833f-b8d1a95c91c7" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Weakening ambition and toughening resolve</h2><p>To weaken ambition doesn't mean to destroy drive. It means to soften the egoic need to prove something. It means ambition that comes from alignment rather than insecurity, while resolve is something deeper. It's what a man stands on, what he holds even when no one is watching.</p><p>Ambition is external. Resolve is internal. This line feels like Lao Tzu is differentiating between the fire of ego and the fire of purpose. One burns you out, the other keeps you warm for a lifetime.</p><p></p><h2 id="c9829873-be36-4f62-a1f8-f47d3a4b3fd4" data-toc-id="c9829873-be36-4f62-a1f8-f47d3a4b3fd4" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Creating confusion in those who think they know</h2><p>I laugh at this line because I've lived it from both sides. Every time I think I have life figured out, something comes along that humbles me instantly.</p><p>In this work, this is the man who thinks he's already doing everything right. He's read the books, watched the videos, convinced he understands relationships, masculinity, success, and self-awareness. But the results of his life tell a different story, and the confusion is the doorway.</p><p>Sometimes clarity comes wrapped in disorientation. Old maps don't work. New maps haven't formed. And in that space, the ego loses its grip, which is exactly where alignment begins.</p><p></p><h2 id="e0927252-472d-4ece-9705-aef0e1f22f38" data-toc-id="e0927252-472d-4ece-9705-aef0e1f22f38" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Wu Wei: Acting without forcing (the centre of the whole chapter)</h2><p>The final line says, <em>"Practice not doing and everything will fall into place."</em> But this is where I had to learn not to take my translation literally, because <em>"not doing"</em> doesn't mean laziness, doesn't mean passivity and it doesn't mean folding your arms and waiting for God or the universe to sort everything out.</p><p>The phrase in Chinese is <em>wu wei</em>, and the closest meaningful translations are: act without forcing, act without distortion, act without ego grasping, act in alignment with the nature of things, act from the structure, not from fear.</p><p>Wu wei is rowing with the river, not against it. It is tension without panic, action without strain, direction without gripping, creativity without self-sabotage. And when I look at my own life, I can see how often I've done the opposite.</p><p></p><h2 id="f7fbf4b3-e9b1-46e1-b8fe-397fa64f0fb9" data-toc-id="f7fbf4b3-e9b1-46e1-b8fe-397fa64f0fb9" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Forcing never works: A real example from my first marriage</h2><p>Without going into unnecessary detail, my first marriage was breaking down. Damage had been done on both sides. We were both hurting. But instead of seeing the structure clearly, my anxious attachment took the wheel, and from that place, I forced.</p><p>I tried to fix what could not be fixed, tried to repair what was already fractured beyond repair. I clung. I pushed. I flooded the space between us with pressure, and every bit of forcing made things worse. The more I tried to hold on, the faster it disintegrated.</p><p>I didn't understand wu wei at the time, but I can feel the truth of it when I look back. Sometimes the most aligned action is letting go. Not collapsing, not giving up, just no longer fighting the river's direction. The beautiful thing is that life eventually sorted itself out, not through more effort, but through less interference.</p><p>Wu wei is not inactivity. It is non-distortion.</p><p></p><h2 id="5beab3c8-ae62-4808-8aa4-bd875f4aafd3" data-toc-id="5beab3c8-ae62-4808-8aa4-bd875f4aafd3" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">How this connects to the creative process</h2><p>This entire chapter lands directly on the heart of structural tension. Creative tension is clean. Emotional tension is messy.</p><p>When emotional tension builds, men either avoid, escape, or numb the discomfort, or they force outcomes to try to relieve it. Both are distortions. Both take you out of alignment.</p><p>Creative tension is what Lao Tzu is pointing to. It's stable, grounded, directional tension that doesn't require panic or pressure, doesn't demand control, doesn't warp your behaviour the way desire, ego, or fear do. Wu wei is simply creative tension in motion: aligned action, non-forcing, following the structure rather than wrestling it.</p><p>When I look at the big moments of my life, the moments that actually changed things for the better, they didn't come from forcing. They came from clarity, from centre, from letting the structure unfold and acting when the next obvious step appeared. Everything that fell apart did so because I pushed. Everything that worked did so because I aligned.</p><p></p><h2 id="9c8892a3-90db-4f18-9275-128da0709549" data-toc-id="9c8892a3-90db-4f18-9275-128da0709549" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">My takeaway from Chapter 3</h2><p>This chapter feels like a warning and an invitation. A warning about the distortion that comes from pedestalising, desiring, overvaluing, and forcing, and an invitation to act from centre, not ego. To loosen ambition but strengthen resolve. To hold clean tension rather than emotional turmoil. To let the river show its direction rather than thrashing to change its course.</p><p>I don't think Lao Tzu is telling us to do nothing. I think he's telling us to stop adding interference. Stop inflating illusions, stop gripping outcomes, stop worshipping humans, stop chasing status, stop trying to outrun discomfort. Do less forcing and more aligning. Less noise and more centre. Less ambition and more resolve.</p><p>And when you live that way, things really do fall into place. Not because of magic, but because you've finally stopped getting in your own way.</p>
