When I first read the opening line of the Tao Te Ching, “The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name,” something in me softened. It felt like permission to stop pretending I could ever capture truth in a sentence. Words can point, sure, but they can’t contain. And yet the text keeps going, naming the unnamable, calling it “darkness within darkness.” That contradiction has stuck with me.It made me wonder: if the unnamable can’t be spoken, why does Laozi keep speaking? Maybe he’s showing us that even imperfect words are part of the Way. That expression itself can be a movement of mystery.The Paradox of NamingThe more I’ve sat with this, the more I’ve noticed how naming creates distance. The moment we name something (ourselves, another person, a situation) we’re no longer in direct relationship with it. We’re relating to our idea of it. I catch myself doing this constantly. Defining what something means instead of just being with what is.Still, naming helps us orient. The danger isn’t in the word itself, but in forgetting that the word is not the thing. I think Laozi keeps naming the unnamable to remind us that language is just a tool. It only becomes harmful when we mistake it for truth.The 80-20 InversionThis bleeds into something I’ve seen in every field I’ve studied or coached in. Theory gives you maybe eighty percent of the picture. It’s useful. It helps you make sense of what you’re seeing. But the remaining twenty percent, the part you can’t learn from a book or a framework, is what actually transforms you.It’s almost an inversion of the usual 80-20 rule. You can understand eighty percent of the theory, but the twenty percent you haven’t lived carries eighty percent of the impact. I’ve watched men spend years mastering models of psychology, nutrition, business, relationships, only to realize later that a single lived experience taught them more than the previous five years of study. A hard conversation. A setback. A moment of silence.That’s the darkness Laozi is pointing to. The unseen place where knowledge turns into knowing.Desire and Non-DesireThe next lines, “Ever desireless, one can see the mystery; ever desiring, one can see the manifestations,” changed meaning for me when I stopped reading them as commandments and started reading them as observations. When we look through desire, we see outcomes. We see what we want to gain, fix, or control. When we relax desire, even briefly, we start to see the deeper pattern beneath everything.Desire isn’t wrong. It’s just loud. It keeps us focused on the visible world. But those quiet, desireless moments are when we glimpse the source, that subtle rhythm behind the noise. The more we practice that kind of seeing, the more we notice how life naturally reveals what’s next when we stop forcing it.Darkness as Fertile Ground“Darkness” used to feel ominous to me. Now it feels sacred. It’s not the darkness of evil, but the darkness of potential. The womb before birth. The silence before a song.Every meaningful change in my life has begun here, in uncertainty, confusion, even despair. The temptation is always to rush out of that darkness, to label it or solve it. But each time I’ve stayed in it, something real has emerged. The Tao seems to live most vividly in those unseen spaces, not in the moments where everything makes sense.From Words to EmbodimentMy biggest lesson from this passage has been about embodiment. I’ve spent years around teachers, coaches, and spiritual leaders who could speak beautifully about truth and mastery, but whose lives didn’t reflect what they taught.One man in particular stands out. A self-proclaimed spiritual mentor for men, teaching them how to embody mature masculinity, how to lead, how to love. On paper he looked enlightened. But behind the curtain were multiple failed marriages, trails of broken trust, and women who described him as manipulative and cold.I watched a man I knew follow his guidance closely, trying to model himself after that example. It ended in the collapse of his marriage. The words sounded profound, but they were disconnected from lived reality. That experience burned a lesson into me: you can teach the eighty percent of theory, but if you haven’t lived the twenty percent that matters, your words become dangerous.Now, whenever I look for teachers or mentors, I ask one question above all: Where’s the evidence of embodiment? It’ll always be there. Or the absence of it will.Axis ApplicationFor me, this first passage is more than philosophy. It’s a practical compass inside Axis Brotherhood.When I guide men, I’m not trying to deliver the right words. I’m pointing them toward lived contact with their own Tao, their own direct experience of truth. The frameworks and language we use are helpful scaffolding, the eighty percent that gives shape to the work. But the real change happens in the remaining twenty percent, the part each man has to experience for himself.So in practice, I keep returning to that darkness. To silence. To uncertainty. To moments where control falls away. I watch where I’m still naming instead of meeting life directly. I remind myself to seek mentors who embody what they speak, and to become that kind of man myself.The words we say, hear, and think are just scaffolding. The real work happens in the silence after.
