<h3 id="dc140d03-8806-4d40-a3c3-56ead496f2ae" data-toc-id="dc140d03-8806-4d40-a3c3-56ead496f2ae">Setting the Scene</h3>For thirteen years I was married, and for most of that time it was, by almost any measure, a good marriage. We shared joy, laughter, steady companionship, and plenty of ordinary days that felt solid and worthwhile. I am not perfect. I made mistakes, and I always had things to work on, yet by most definitions I was a good husband for the majority of those years.The final twelve months were turbulent. Divorce came, and with it, the instinct to attribute the breakdown entirely to those last months. But that would be too simple. The truth is there were many factors. I made mistakes, she made mistakes, and there were wounds on both sides. Yet when I reflect now, one pattern stands out as the most significant lesson I took with me. It was not the only reason, but it was one of the deepest and most consistent.<hr><h3 id="d1356f3a-b033-4469-a745-02e2fca7d070" data-toc-id="d1356f3a-b033-4469-a745-02e2fca7d070">The Pattern I Could Not See</h3>There is a way that many men, myself included, slip into a habit of communication during conflict. Often we believe we are speaking directly to our partners, but we are actually speaking as though an audience were watching. It is not always obvious in the moment. It happens unconsciously, in subtle shifts of tone, posture, or choice of words.When this pattern shows up, the conversation is no longer about two people navigating their shared experience. It becomes something else. A performance. A case being made. A defence being built. It is less about understanding and more about proving.I can remember countless small examples. Times when I felt the sharp satisfaction of “winning” because I had trapped her in logic, forcing her to admit I was right. At the time it felt like a victory. In hindsight it feels absurd. What was I actually winning? A marriage is not a debate. A relationship cannot thrive on points scored.<hr><h3 id="da2ff056-3e72-4165-8b19-259e665a0015" data-toc-id="da2ff056-3e72-4165-8b19-259e665a0015">The Courtroom at Home</h3>This way of relating can best be described as litigious communication. Words are delivered as though we are standing in court, arguing before a jury, waiting for a verdict of guilty or not guilty. In that mindset, the focus shifts from connection to defense.But there is no judge. No jury. There is only the person in front of you and what she feels in that moment. As Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”In marriage, this could not be truer. If what I said was technically correct but made my wife feel small, unseen, or dismissed, what was I building? Not intimacy. Not safety. Not joy. Just distance. And the impact of that distance compounds over time.There is only the felt experience of the woman in front of you, and the impact of your words in that moment, the connection suffers — even if what you are saying is technically correct.<hr><h3 id="dc9baaeb-db6e-43ae-910d-075282e64e5a" data-toc-id="dc9baaeb-db6e-43ae-910d-075282e64e5a">The Invisible Audience</h3>Men often carry an invisible audience into their conversations. Sometimes it shows up as an eye roll to a third party, a half-joke at our partner’s expense, or a glance for validation. I have seen men do this in couples’ sessions. I have done it myself. In fact, in the final twelve months of my first marriage, when we engaged psychologists and marriage counsellors, I caught myself waiting for their validation, almost unconsciously seeking the verdict: “See, I’m right, aren’t I?” In those moments, the therapist became the judge, and I was making my case.This is what I mean by the invisible audience. It is as if we are on a stage, even when no one else is in the room, always aware of an imagined crowd of men who are judging and measuring us. It is cultural as much as it is personal. For centuries, men have proven themselves before other men - in the tribe, in the hunt, in the workplace, on the battlefield. That orientation toward the judgment of peers lingers today, shaping even how we speak to the women we love.Our partners may not consciously know the details of this pattern, but they can feel it. They know when they are not being spoken to directly. They know when the words are not for them. And it corrodes trust.<hr><h3 id="269b5494-3b87-4983-9639-6737fbc80f2a" data-toc-id="269b5494-3b87-4983-9639-6737fbc80f2a">A Gift &amp; a Curse</h3>In my experience, the sharper the mind, the easier it is to fall into this trap. The more intelligent a man is, the more tools he has to construct arguments, defend positions, and trap his partner in logic. It can feel powerful in the moment, but it leaves the relationship weakened.This is the paradox. The very intellect that helps a man succeed in his career, build businesses, or solve complex problems can become a weapon against intimacy if it is left unchecked. Awareness is the antidote.<hr><h3 id="79e9bd54-6cf0-429e-bccf-4949990e3510" data-toc-id="79e9bd54-6cf0-429e-bccf-4949990e3510">The Compound Cost</h3>It is tempting to believe that the end of a marriage is the result of one disastrous situation or period… But for me, the deeper truth is that this habit of speaking as though others were watching was alive from Day 1. It was the slow erosion, the gradual distance, the repeated moments where connection was lost because I wanted to be right.That was the cost. Not all at once, but in hundreds of small cuts over time. And though I carry regret and sadness about it, I also carry clarity. Because now I see it for what it was.<hr><h3 id="9fd8e0cc-69a4-4c11-8aaf-b2b1161d7a45" data-toc-id="9fd8e0cc-69a4-4c11-8aaf-b2b1161d7a45">What I Do Differently Now</h3>Today I still catch the pattern, but I see it sooner. Words rise in me and I pause to ask: Who am I speaking to right now? That question pulls me back into the present. It reminds me that it is only her, only us, only this moment that matters.What makes this lesson bittersweet is that the one who first bore the cost of my blindness will never see the change. She will never know that the words which once created distance are now the very reason I speak with more care. She will never see that I have learned to soften, to listen, and to speak for the relationship rather than for the ghosts in my head.That is a quiet grief I carry. And yet, it is also the gift that allows me to love differently now. To be a better husband to the woman I love &amp; share my life with today. To let the mistakes of my past become the guardrails that keep me honest in the present.<hr><h3 id="32da05f7-9b7f-4ef9-99eb-b009b2f1e1e7" data-toc-id="32da05f7-9b7f-4ef9-99eb-b009b2f1e1e7">Time for Reflection</h3>This is not just my story. It is a pattern I see in many men. And once you see it, you cannot un-see it.If you want to begin shifting it, here are three questions you can carry into your next conflict:<ol><li>What is she feeling right now?</li><li>What is my actual intention for us?</li><li>What is the simplest sentence I can say that serves the relationship?</li></ol>These are not tricks. They are reminders. They bring the focus back to what matters: the relationship, not the courtroom.The challenge is simple and difficult at once. Speak not for the audience you imagine. Speak for her. Speak for you. Speak for the life you are building together. That is where real connection is found.
